Salesforce buys AI analytics startup Loops
Salesforce is buying Loops, an AI-powered analytics startup that tries to answer the question dashboards usually leave hanging: Why did the number change?
Loops monitors business performance, flags trends and anomalies, and uses machine learning and causal analysis to identify what drove changes in metrics such as revenue, conversions, retention, and engagement. Its Scout product can push those findings via Slack and email instead of forcing users to hunt through another analytics interface. Salesforce plans to fold Loops’ technology and team into Tableau. The price wasn’t disclosed.
The acquisition fits Salesforce’s broader push to make Tableau more proactive and more agent-driven. Instead of waiting for someone to open a dashboard, inspect the data, and start asking questions, Salesforce wants AI agents to continuously monitor performance, explain what changed, and surface possible actions. That’s a useful direction for marketers because reporting still tends to stop at “what happened.” The harder part is figuring out what caused the change and whether there’s anything worth doing about it. Loops is designed to move analytics closer to that second step.
The bigger question is how much trust marketers should put in an AI system that moves from spotting correlations to suggesting causes and actions. Loops’ appeal comes from reducing the manual work of investigating performance shifts, but the value depends on the quality of the underlying data and the system’s ability to separate a real driver from a plausible-looking explanation. Salesforce clearly sees that as part of Tableau’s future: less passive reporting, more continuous interpretation. The deal is expected to close in early November.
