Google Discover may become a “proactive, hyper-personalized concierge experience that helps users make progress on their goals,” according to a new Google job posting.

Google posted a new job posting to hire a Principal, UX, Search Discover that lists out a few job responsibilities that may signal the future direction of Google Discover.

Job responsibilities.

The listed job responsibilities include:

  • Lead the design vision and execution to transform Discover into a proactive, hyper-personalized concierge experience that helps users make progress on their goals. Balance AI capabilities while centering human voices and sources.
  • Develop thoughtful, user-first strategies for making Discover a more impactful experience that serves a scaled consumer base and helps existing users go deeper, moving seamlessly from inspiration to action.
  • Evolve feed formats by scaling AI enabled formats, designing new engagement mechanisms, and elevating human voices and perspectives in the feed.
  • Leverage experience with scaled consumer feed products to advocate for and drive best practices and design strategies for feed experiences.
  • Nurture and advocate for a high-craft design organization, and innovate to deliver native app interactions.

Personalized concierge.

The responsibility that reads, “transform Discover into a proactive, hyper-personalized concierge experience that helps users make progress on their goals,” is a telling line.

Right now, Google Discover is a feed of content that Google thinks you would be interested in seeing. Google will also sometimes show you products that you might want to purchase. But transforming Discover from a feed of content and into a personal concierge is a big change.

Why we care.

Google Discover is one of the primary traffic drivers to news publications. If Google changes the feed from a content feed to an AI concierge of sorts, what will happen to that traffic driver for publications?

It is all super early and we may be reading too much into the job description, but it is interesting.
