# Alphabet Reports Q3 2026 Earnings: Mixed Results as Search Growth Decelerates

> Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings revealed significant growth in overall advertising revenue, but missed analyst expectations on earnings and revenue, with a notable deceleration in Search revenue growth. Cloud revenue doubled, contributing positively despite a decline in traditional advertising growth.

# Alphabet Reports Q3 2026 Earnings: Mixed Results as Search Growth Decelerates

Alphabet **released** its Q3 2026 earnings last night:

- **Overall advertising revenue grew by 10.6%** to $82.0BN.
- **Search revenue grew by 12.0%** to $63.4BN.
- **YouTube advertising revenue grew by 9.2%** to $11.2BN.
- **Google’s Network segment revenue grew by 1.4% year-over-year** to $7.5BN, reversing its 16-quarter decline with its first year-over-year increase since Q2 2022.
- The **Subscriptions, Platforms, and Devices segment grew by 11.0%** to $14.3BN.

Alphabet **missed** analyst expectations on both earnings and revenue, though the EPS delta was primarily due to a recognized loss on its SpaceX holdings. The company’s cloud revenue more than doubled in the quarter; although advertising revenue growth was relatively weak at 11% (down from 14% in Q2), Alphabet’s cloud business buoyed overall growth, with total revenue up 25%.

Notably, this was the first quarter in the company’s modern history for which Search didn’t represent a majority of total revenue (Search was 49.7% of total in Q3, compared to 52.8% in Q2). The company’s stock traded down by as much as 10% following its earnings release.

## Search Revenue Growth Deceleration

The deceleration in Search revenue growth in Q3 was dramatic — down from 17% in Q2 — although at 12%, Search revenue growth was still quite healthy, and it sits above the lower bound of the two-year range (Search growth was 10% in Q1 2025). Management attributed the deceleration to several factors in the **earnings call**: FX as the largest _sequential_ driver, the EU’s elimination of its _de minimis_ customs exemption, and AI Mode’s weaker ad monetization relative to traditional Search. I’ll focus here on the last because a) neither of the other two issues is unique to Alphabet, and b) it raises the most consequential questions about Search’s long-term commercial prospects.

It’s tempting to look at the successive deceleration in Search revenue growth from Q1 2026 as a response to pressure from other chatbots and to assume that Search query volume is migrating elsewhere. But the earnings release notes that the “year-over-year Search query growth rate [was] the highest it has been in the last five years” in Q3, so it’s clear that Search _usage_ isn’t declining.

## Bear Thesis Analysis

In making sense of the deceleration, it’s important to distinguish between two variations of Google’s chatbot bear thesis:

1. That the queries that consumers submitted to Search would be submitted to chatbots, and so Search usage would decline, starving the company of opportunities to monetize.
2. That Google’s adaptation to consumers’ chatbot preferences — its introduction of AI Overviews and AI Mode — would capture engagement and retain consumer queries but with weaker monetization, deteriorating the economics of its core Search business.

Some commentary I’ve seen seems anchored to the first bear thesis, which I view as essentially refuted at this point. AI Overviews has 2.5BN MAU; AI Mode has 1BN MAU. These are large, scaled products, and in concert with legacy Search, Google’s total search query volume is reaching all-time highs or growing at near-term highs. I chronicle Google’s transformation into a chatbot-enabled “engagement sink” in my **_Google’s Gambit_** series. My sense is that transformation is complete.

A counterargument is that Google is inflating search query volume by not distinguishing between queries on legacy Search and queries in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which would be more numerous because those products are conversational by nature. I view this as a mostly pedantic and semantic objection; query volume is engagement, and engagement is up.

## Future of Monetization

This leads the conversation to bear thesis #2. This thesis is more defensible. It’s clearly the case that AI Mode monetizes to a lesser degree than legacy Search, and Philipp Schindler, Alphabet’s Chief Business Officer, stated as much on the earnings call:

> “It’s also — to the next part of your question, it’s worth noting that the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode. To be clear, we feel very good about our trajectory here. Our ad experiments have shown promising results, and we’re now scaling ads within both AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and more queries, including, as I mentioned, international markets and multiturn ads in the U.S.”

Two other aspects of Alphabet’s Q3 earnings are worth highlighting.

First, the Network segment’s revenue grew for the first time since Q2 2022. This could simply be volatility on relatively small numbers: the segment’s revenue fell 0.69% in Q2, or $51MM, from Q2 2025, and rose 1.37%, or $101MM, in Q3. But it could also reflect Google’s decision to show more ads in AI Mode, with its automated Performance Max (PMax) platform routing more ad spend to Network from Search as Search click-through rates declined.

Second, YouTube advertising revenue growth decelerated to 9.2% (from 12.9% in Q2). But revenue growth in Google’s subscriptions, platforms, and devices segment also decelerated to 11.0% (from 15.2% in Q2). My YouTube advertising and subscription revenue model now puts advertising at just under two-thirds of total YouTube revenue.
