# Google Updates AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search

> Google announced several enhancements to AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search, making it easier for users to explore information and content quickly.

## Google Updates AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search

Google announced a number of updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews within Google Search, aimed at helping searchers dive deeper and get information faster. Google said these changes aim to make “exploring the web simpler, more visual, and more engaging.”

Google is also touting how these changes may help publishers, but I am not sure about that at this point.

### More Inline Links
Google said the AI Overviews and AI Mode results now have inline links that are embedded in words or phrases within the AI response. Google added that it has “made continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links” in the AI search responses.

Google is also showing these inline links higher up in the AI response, more often. Google said this is to “ensure key sources are easily clickable.” But will searchers click? I suspect not, otherwise Google would give us click data broken down in the [AI performance reports](https://searchengineland.com/google-search-console-ai-performance-reports-and-search-generative-ai-control-rolling-out-globally-486269) in Google Search Console, which Google still does not do.

### Links to the Source
Google also said that in cases where there are only a couple of official places on the web to complete a task or get the specific information you are looking for, Google will display a new experience to surface these links in a dedicated section at the top of the AI response. The response will have context about why the links are useful, hopefully encouraging the searcher to click.

Here is how that might look:

### Article Carousels
Google previously announced this but is now rolling out the article carousels for timely based queries. These article carousels are shown in the AI responses, and are now showing up for “additional locations and languages globally.” Google added that these carousels highlight your preferred sources, which do make them stand out to searchers. Plus, Google expanded how often these will show up by offering them for a “wider range of queries.”

Here is what these look like:

### Related Articles
Google is also adding images and thumbnails, which they call a “more clickable design” to some AI responses. These offer “related articles” that searchers will more easily be able to see, and hopefully click on.

Here is what that looks like:

### Clickable Search Profiles Links in AI Mode
Google is also adding to some of the AI Mode responses the ability to click on a search profile name, which will bring up that creator’s search profile on Google. These will show up on videos within AI Mode.

Keep in mind, it does not take you to the creator’s own web site, it takes you to a Google landing page for Search profiles, which then can take you to the various pages operated by the creator.

Here is how this works:

### Preferred Sources Growth
Finally, Google said there has been 7x growth of Preferred Sources this year, “helping people choose the sources they want to see on Search.”

### Why We Care
Google is clearly trying to make an effort to get searchers to click on links in AI responses. But will it be enough? Will searchers who get a full, detailed and rich AI response end up clicking? So far, it doesn’t seem that way, but Google is making efforts.

Again, it would be nice if Google showed up the data in Search Console, but Google has thus refused to do so.
